Dollar eases as Iran and Israel agree to halt strikes
NEW YORK/LONDON, June 9 —— The dollar eased but hovered near its highest level in nearly two months, after Iran and Israel agreed to halt attacks on each other following an appeal by U.S. President Donald Trump. The pause in strikes by both Iran and Israel lured investors into other currencies that had been dented after strong U.S. jobs data on Friday prompted traders to ramp up bets on a Federal Reserve rate rise this year.
The attacks over 24 hours were the most direct confrontation between Iran and Israel since an April ceasefire, threatening to wreck U.S. efforts to reach an agreement with the Iranians to end their more than three-month-old war. The euro was a touch stronger on the day at $1.1531 but still hovered near its lowest level in around nine weeks, while the pound edged above three-week lows to $1.3390.
DATA IN FOCUS
Weekly data from the U.S. Federal Reserve shows that in the week to June 4, the day before payroll figures, investors cut their bullish positions in the euro to the lowest in three months, while adding to their bearish bets on the yen, positions now worth more than $10 billion, according to LSEG data.
The Federal Open Market Committee meets next week for the first time under its new chair, Kevin Warsh. For now, markets see a roughly 40 per cent chance of a hike by October, according to CME’s FedWatch tool. Markets are also eyeing U.S. inflation data on Wednesday for clues to the Fed’s possible moves.
Meanwhile, the European Central Bank is widely expected to raise rates this week, with another increase likely in September, as it seeks to balance energy-driven inflation against a weakening economy. “The big event this week is going to be the ECB rate hike and the U.S. CPI data,” said Kit Juckes, chief FX strategist at Societe Generale. “If you got a really big upside surprise on U.S. inflation on Wednesday, then I suspect the dollar would get a bid. But if it looked really benign enough to kind of walk us a little back from the edge in terms of rate expectations, then that will be a different story. Likewise, if the ECB sounds like they’re going to be one and done for now, I don’t think that will sort the euro out,” Juckes said.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, fell 0.07 per cent to 100.
SAFE-HAVEN DOLLAR
The dollar has drawn on its safe-haven credentials in the past couple of weeks, as well as the prospect of a widening gap between U.S. rates and those elsewhere. This has hit the Japanese yen particularly hard. The yen has erased the gains made in the wake of Japan’s 11.7 trillion yen ($73.0 billion) intervention just over a month ago, when it slid to its lowest since July 2024 at 160.725.
Sources told Reuters that the BOJ is expected to raise interest rates this month unless a sharp escalation in the Iran war upends markets, as rising fuel costs from the energy shock compound price pressures in the economy.
The Japanese yen strengthened 0.1 per cent against the greenback to 160.17 per dollar. “A 25 bpt rate hike is generally expected and almost fully priced, leaving little in terms of near-term upside,” Scotiabank analyst Shaun Osborne said in an investor note. “For USD/JPY, we remain focused on the 160 level as a major psychological anchor point for official currency management (intervention).”

Iran, Israel say hostilities on hold after first attacks since truce
TEHRAN, Iran, June 9 —— Iran and Israel said that hostilities between them had halted, after the two countries exchanged strikes that threatened to reignite the Middle East war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the “fire on that front is contained” hours after Tehran said it had stopped its military action.
Tehran launched missiles at Israel on Sunday over Israel’s ongoing war against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel then struck back, despite efforts by US President Donald Trump to dissuade Netanyahu. That triggered another round of Iranian missiles, before Tehran announced it would cease fire.
Iran has sought to tie its truce with the United States — in place since April 8 despite repeated attacks by both sides — to Israel’s war against Hezbollah, warning that attacks on Lebanon would force it to act. Tehran said on Monday it would attack again if Israel persisted with its strikes in Lebanon, while Netanyahu warned in turn that should Iran “make the mistake of resuming attacks against us, we will respond with full force”.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz insisted that the campaign in Lebanon would carry on regardless and said Israel would strike the Hezbollah-dominated southern suburbs of Beirut in retaliation for each attack on northern Israel by the militant group. Trump, who has reportedly grown increasingly exasperated with Netanyahu, had earlier urged both sides to stop “shooting” and said that “final negotiations” towards peace would proceed “subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way”. The Israeli premier, though, said in a televised statement he had told Trump that “Israel has a full right to self-defense, and we are exercising it as required”.
DEADLY STRIKES IN LEBANON
Iran fired nearly 30 missiles at Israel overnight, according to the Israeli military, and Israel targeted military sites in the Islamic republic. No casualties have been reported in either Israel or Iran after the exchange of fire. But violence continued in southern Lebanon on Monday, with an Israeli strike killing five people in the city of Tyre while another in the Nabatieh district left seven dead and a third in Marwanieh killed two, the Lebanese health ministry said.
The Israeli military said it had identified projectiles launched towards its soldiers operating in southern Lebanon, some of which were intercepted while one landed near troops without causing casualties. It later said that a “suspicious aerial target” from Yemen had been intercepted without any reported injuries.
CALM IN TEHRAN
On Monday in Tehran, there was little sign of any return to war, with cafe terraces packed. Traffic seemed lighter than usual for a weekday, suggesting that some people had stayed home and there were also many more people queueing at petrol stations. Maryam, 41, an accountant in Tehran, described “a sense of uncertainty and confusion.” “You don’t know if there’s going to be a war, nor do you know if the peace agreement will last. Nothing is clear. People are frustrated,” she said. Residents of Tel Aviv meanwhile went to shelters as sirens went off. “I hope it will be short, but you can never know. Last time we thought it would be short and then it was a month, so I don’t know,” said Jonathan Ariel, 30.
Iranian news agencies reported early Tuesday that the capital’s international airport — shut down over the renewed missile launches — had reopened, allowing flights carrying hajj pilgrims from Saudi Arabia to land. The world’s main crude contracts, Brent North Sea and West Texas Intermediate, surged by more than five percent in Asian trading hours on worries that the war would resume but eased later in the day, logging gains of 1.3 percent and 0.8 percent respectively.
The conflict has seen Tehran all but halt shipments of the Gulf’s oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz while Washington has imposed a blockade on Iran’s ports. The US military said it struck and disabled an unladen oil tanker Monday that violated the ports blockade.
STILL ‘AT THE NEGOTIATING TABLE’
The exchange of fire between Iran and Israel came at a critical moment for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict involving mediator Pakistan.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei warned at a press conference in Tehran on Monday that diplomacy was continuing but could be affected by the fighting. As he was speaking at the foreign ministry, a huge explosion shook the building, followed by repeated explosions believed to be from air defense systems, an AFP reporter said.
Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Tehran to deliver what he said was a “special letter” to Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, according to Iranian state television. He has since returned to Pakistan, an official Pakistani source said on Monday.

World Oceans Day: IMO Urges Nations to Put Policies into Practice
June 9 —— To mark World Ocean Day, the IMO is calling on its 176 Member States and the global shipping industry to step up implementation of measures to protect the marine environment.
In a video message for World Oceans Day, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said: “At IMO, we take our responsibility to protect the ocean seriously. With shipping being one of the main users of the ocean space, it is the reason why we focus on enhancing our regulatory framework to reduce pollution and address new challenges, such as underwater radiated noise and transboundary species. “Beyond setting the rules, we must put policy into practice,” he added, reflecting the IMO World Maritime Day theme for 2026-2027: ‘From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence’.
Over many decades, IMO has established a robust set of international instruments to prevent pollution, protect marine life, and support safer, more sustainable shipping.
Global treaties such as the MARPOL Convention on the prevention of marine pollution from ships, Ballast Water Management Convention and Anti-Fouling Systems Convention to limit the spread of invasive aquatic species, the Hong Kong Convention on ship recycling, and the London Convention and Protocol on dumping of wastes at sea, all work to safeguard the marine environment.
Tackling marine plastic litter: Adoption of the 2026 Strategy and the Action Plan to Address Marine Plastic Litter from Ships, reaffirming IMO’s goal of zero plastic waste discharges to sea from ships by 2030.
Reducing underwater radiated noise (URN): Extension to 2028 of the trial phase for IMO’s revised Guidelines for the reduction of Underwater Radiated Noise from shipping to address adverse impacts on marine life (URN guidelines), with plans to commission an IMO study to inform future measures.
Combatting ships’ biofouling: Agreement among Member States to develop a standalone legally binding instrument for the control and management of ships’ biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species and protect biodiversity.
Climate and ocean nexus: Ongoing discussions on regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

EU Imposes Sanctions Calling For Strait of Hormuz Freedom of Navigation
June 9 —— The European Council announced that it was imposing sanctions, including on Iran’s IRGC, while calling for freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The move comes as the Europeans also appear to be setting the stage for a mine clearance program in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Council said it was extending its legal framework targeting those involved in Iran’s actions and policies threatening the freedom of navigation in the Middle East. It said the actions are contrary to international law and infringe upon established rights of both transit and innocent passage through international straits. It also follows the move by the Council in March supporting the UN Security Council resolution while emphasizing the need to ensure maritime security and respect the freedom of navigation.
In today’s action, the Council listed the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN), which was previously listed by the EU. The Council highlighted that the IRGC Navy has assumed control of the Strait of Hormuz and implemented a toll system whereby vessels are now required to provide identifying documentation, as well as cargo and destination information, which is ultimately passed onto the Hormozgan Provincial Command. Using this information, the Hormozgan Provincial Command screens vessels and determines which ones are allowed to transit through the strait, sometimes after paying tolls.
The United States has already sanctioned the tolling system and the launch of Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority. The U.S. said it was a front for the IRGC and IRGC Navy to control the waterway, while Donald Trump has repeatedly said the Strait must be open as part of any peace agreement.
The EU Council reported it also listed two individuals which is said were directly supporting Iran’s actions impeding lawful transit passage and freedom of navigation. Mohammad Akbarzadeh, Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of the IRGC Navy and its spokesperson, was included with the Council citing his threats to use missiles or drones against vessels transiting the strait. Hamid Hosseini, a representative of Iran’s Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union and a member of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, was included for promoting the policy of submitting, undergoing assessment, and paying transit fees to Iranian authorities for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
With today’s listings, the European Council noted that restrictive measures under this amended framework now apply to 26 natural and legal persons and 27 entities from a range of countries. Those listed under the sanctions regime are subject to an asset freeze, and it is prohibited to provide them with funds or economic resources, either directly or indirectly. Additionally, a travel ban to the EU applies to all natural persons listed.
While the Europeans have not formally announced their plan for mine clearance in the Strait of Hormuz, actions appeared to show a force being formed in anticipation of progress in the talks between the United States and Iran. British, French, Italian, Dutch, and German assets all appeared to be moving toward the formation of the effort. It is anticipated that the Europeans would go forward once an agreement and stability are achieved in the region.

Houthis threaten attacks against Israel-linked vessels in the Red Sea
June 9 —— Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement said that it had launched a missile attack on Israel and declared a “complete and total ban” on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea, warning that Israeli-linked vessels would again be considered legitimate military targets.
The announcement raised concerns over renewed disruption to the Red Sea shipping route that had previously been heavily affected. In a statement, the group said it fired missiles at what it described as sensitive Israeli targets in the Jaffa area, claiming the strikes “achieved their objectives with precision.”
The Houthis said the attacks were carried out in response to Israeli military actions across several regional fronts, including Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, and Iran, and vowed to escalate operations in coordination with allied Iran-backed groups.
The missile launch marks the first confirmed Houthi strike on Israel since a fragile ceasefire began in early April. Israeli authorities said a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted and reported that air defenses were activated, with airspace temporarily closed during the incident.
The Houthis, who control large parts of northern Yemen including the capital Sanaa, have carried out repeated missile, drone, and maritime attacks against Israel and commercial shipping since October 2023, saying their campaign is in support of Palestinians in Gaza and other Iran-aligned groups.
Their previous campaign in the Red Sea forced many operators to divert routes around southern Africa, significantly increasing transit times and costs, and the latest threats revive fears of renewed instability in the region’s shipping lanes.

Sarangani quake death toll rises to 37
MANILA, June 9 —— The death toll from the 7.8 magnitude offshore quake in Sarangani has risen to 37, the Office of Civil Defense said. OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Agustin Mariano said as of 6 a.m., there were four recorded in Region 11 (Davao) and 33 in Region 12 (SOCCSKSARGEN). “These are still for validation,” Mariano told reporters.
There are 18 deaths being validated in Sarangani province, 12 in General Santos City– both in Region 12 — and three in South Cotabato. The OCD has yet to release figures on the damage caused by the strong quake. Earlier reports said there were 144 injured and four missing persons.
Initial assessment indicated that General Santos City was the worst affected when the quake struck at 7:37 a.m. Monday in the Celebes Sea. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded 1,055 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3-6.7.
The OCD said the national government is working with local officials in Sarangani for relief and assistance. It will deploy generators and fuels for use of hospitals to ensure the continuous operations of medical facilities.

AFP chief confirms moving structure in lagoon of Bajo de Masinloc
MANILA, June 9 —— Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. confirmed that a moving structure was found inside the lagoon of Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
According to Brawner, the structure measured approximately six meters by six meters and was seen carrying six individuals. To determine the nature of the structure, the military has deployed aircraft over the area. “Nagpalipad tayo ng mga eroplano sa Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal para makita natin ang ginagawang structures doon—if it is a floating structure or a fixed structure. Kailangan talagang makita natin,” Brawner told defense reporters in a chance interview at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. “Sa ngayon, nasa gitna, nasa loob na siya. It’s a 6×6 structure na parang may antenna siya,” he added. “Sa latest image na nakuha ng ating Philippine Air Force (PAF) na lumipad over Bajo de Masinloc, may mga tao sa taas. May anim na tao doon sa structure… Hindi natin alam exactly ano ang ginagawa nila.”
The military continues to conduct aerial surveillance whenever weather conditions permit and is also planning to deploy ships to monitor activities in the area. “Today, nakapagpalipad tayo… Tuwing maganda ang panahon, nagpapalipad tayo ng mga eroplano para mamonitor natin ang mga nangyayari. May mga ipapadala rin tayong mga barko,” the AFP chief noted.
Brawner said the structure appears to be the same object earlier seen in satellite imagery shared online by SeaLight director and maritime expert Ray Powell. Powell had posted satellite images taken on May 28 showing the southern entrance to Bajo de Masinloc’s lagoon. The imagery revealed a small reflective object at the tip of the southern reef rim, which Powell said was “clearly distinguishable on the reef flat near the lagoon entrance.”
The AFP chief warned against allowing any construction activity that could eventually alter the status of the shoal. “Hindi natin papayagang maulit ang nangyari noon na may itinayong isang maliit na structure. Later on, lumaki pa siya into an artificial island. Hindi tayo papayag dito sa Scarborough Shoal,” Brawner stressed.
In response to the development, Brawner said the government has already undertaken diplomatic measures. “Marami tayong ginagawang actions against that. For instance, ang Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) nag-issue ng demarche. Kausap din natin ang mga kaalyado natin at partner nations natin dahil interesado rin sila sa mga nangyayari dito,” he said. “We have a lot of options. First option is through diplomacy,” he added.
The sighting comes amid continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where the Philippines has repeatedly protested activities that undermine its sovereign rights and jurisdiction in areas within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Gatchalian rejects signature sharing with Cayetano
MANILA, Philippines, June 9 —— Acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian has shot down Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s proposal for an interim sharing of administrative responsibilities to prevent the still simmering challenge to his leadership from derailing the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a letter dated June 7, Cayetano instructed his designated Senate secretary Jose Luis Montales to negotiate a “dual-signatory or joint-certification mechanism” with Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. This means Cayetano and Gatchalian would be jointly signing official documents.
The proposal comes as the Senate Impeachment Court, according to Cayetano, is scheduled to officially issue a Notice of Pre-Trial today. Under his proposed arrangement, critical administrative paperwork – including disbursement vouchers, checks, contracts and personnel actions – would bear his and Gatchalian’s signatures – ostensibly to ensure the Senate’s daily operations continue smoothly. “Pending resolution (by the Supreme Court), it is imperative that the resulting legal and political dispute not be allowed to unnecessarily disrupt the operations of the Senate, impair the work of the Impeachment Court or diminish the institution’s ability to discharge its constitutional responsibilities,” Cayetano said in the letter.
At a press conference yesterday, Cayetano bared that Gatchalian rejected his proposal, also in a letter. “A letter at around 12 (noon), tells Montales that ‘you are no longer Senate secretary’ and that attorney Bantug… basically, saying they are in charge,” Cayetano said in English and Filipino.
Gatchalian has yet to furnish the media copies of his response to Cayetano’s letter. Maintaining his position that the June 3 reorganization was illegal, Cayetano accused Gatchalian’s bloc of usurpation of authority and taunting his leadership of the chamber as “Senate of Malacañang.”
House of Representatives Secretary General Cheloy Garafil, meanwhile, said there is no more need for the 11-member House prosecution team to make a formal reply to the “non-answer” Duterte submitted to the Senate Impeachment Court. “Under the applicable rules, the allegations and defenses in the Answer are deemed controverted even without a Reply,” read a portion of the manifestation Garafil submitted to the Senate. Bantug received the manifestation yesterday.
The House prosecution team has accused the Vice President of again raising procedural, jurisdictional and constitutional objections instead of presenting factual narratives supporting her general denial of the allegations. Copies of the manifestation were likewise furnished to the Office of the VP and the law firm Fortun Narvasa & Salazar. “More fundamentally, the Answer raises no material factual issue that requires a responsive pleading. It does not meaningfully engage the factual allegations in the Articles of Impeachment, but instead concentrates on procedural, jurisdictional and constitutional objections directed against the continuation of the proceedings,” it added.
Lawmaker-prosecutors noted that Duterte’s answer failed to directly address any of the accusations against or explain why she should not be held liable for her offenses. “This is evident across all four Articles, where respondent repeatedly asserts that she committed no impeachable offense. Beyond these general denials, the Answer offers no coherent factual narrative that directly refutes the charges set forth in the Articles of Impeachment,” it added.
Duterte faces four Articles of Impeachment covering her alleged misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds, bribery, unexplained wealth and grave threats against President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta and former speaker Martin Romualdez. For each Article of Impeachment, the prosecution observed that Duterte failed to present her version of events or provide any accounting of the transactions in question, including the alleged non-disclosure of cash on hand in her statements of assets, liabilities and net worth.
Considering the substantial lack of counter evidence in her answer, the House prosecutors said the Vice President appears to be seeking the dismissal of the case before the Senate impeachment court can even hear the evidence. “In substance, therefore, the Answer does not function as a genuine response to the charges, but as an attempt to secure the outright dismissal of the impeachment case on threshold constitutional and procedural grounds,” the manifestation read.
The prosecution team, on the other hand, argued that no provision in the 1987 Constitution or the Senate Rules on Impeachment Trials authorizes the outright dismissal of an impeachment case before a trial. According to the prosecutors, the only recognized basis for terminating an impeachment proceeding is an acquittal rendered by the impeachment court after a full hearing of the evidence.

No electricity for 800,000 households; flights canceled
MANILA, Philippines, June 9 —— The magnitude 7.8 earthquake off Sarangani on Monday disrupted electricity service to more than 800,000 households across Mindanao, prompting the Department of Energy (DOE) to assess damage to energy infrastructure and accelerate power restoration efforts.
Citing initial reports, the DOE said around 864,000 households, mostly in South Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat and the Davao region, experienced blackouts as of 2 p.m. Through its Task Force on Energy Resiliency, the DOE immediately activated coordination mechanisms with electric cooperatives, distribution utilities, oil industry stakeholders and other relevant agencies to monitor the condition and operational status of energy facilities in affected areas.
According to the DOE, the outages affected households within the franchise areas of six power distributors: South Cotabato I Electric Cooperative (SOCOTECO I), South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative (SOCOTECO II), Sultan Kudarat Electric Cooperative (SUKELCO), Northern Davao Electric Cooperative, Davao Light and Power Co. and Cotabato Light and Power Co.
Due to this, SOCOTECO I, SOCOTECO II and SUKELCO had declared a state of total power interruption, affecting 803,230 households. Sixteen other electric cooperatives being monitored had already normalized operations, according to the National Electrification Administration. Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines suspended airport operations at General Santos International Airport following the earthquake and the tsunami warning issued by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Tulfo sues 3 of 18 ‘bagmen’ for defamation
MANILA, June 9 —— Senator Erwin Tulfo on Monday filed a grave oral defamation complaint before a Pasay City court against three of the 18 ex-congressman Zaldy Co’s former bodyguards who claimed to have delivered suitcases filled with money to politicians.
Tulfo said he would not let what he described as baseless allegations and false accusations pass. “Dati po pinalusot ko pa ito noong una. I mean, dahil wala namang talagang katotohanan. Pero yung ginawa nila noong June 4, padami na padami. Dati ilang maleta lang, naging walong maleta na. Tapos meron na ngayong human trafficking. Puro kalokohan na,” said Tulfo. “Tapos nakakalungkot. Pinagtatanggalan naman nila yung listahan, nagbawas sila ng mga tao. So talaga nakikita mo na gawa-gawa lang po nila itong mga accusations,” he added.
Tulfo was among the personalities the group accused of receiving cash from Co. He said he would inhibit from the proceedings should the 18 ex-bodyguards attend the panel hearing. The senator noted that he believes politics is behind efforts to link his name to the scandal.
Despite this, Tulfo maintained that he has no plans to seek a higher position in the next national elections. “Politics. Dahil nga may mga nagsilabasan, ito na ang sinasabi ko noon pa, I think three months ago. Huwag nyo kami samasama dyan sa survey na yan, presidential, tapos may lumabas pa, tapos mga pahayag ng mga political analysts na only a Tulfo can beat the Dutertes,” he said. “Hindi naman kami interesado kung tumakbo si Sara, di tumakbo siya. Marami pong interesado na tumakbo na pagkapangulo. Bakit kami kaagad ang tutulak dyan?” he added.
Meanwhile, the senator disclosed that he received an email from Batangas Rep. Leandro Leviste, son of Sen. Loren Legarda, expressing his intention to attend a Blue Ribbon hearing under his leadership. According to Tulfo, the email proves Leviste recognizes the panel under his chairmanship and not the one being led by Senator Pia Cayetano. “Ang sagot ko naman po sa kaniya, through our Blue Ribbon secretariat, magpadala po siya ng affidavit para malaman po namin kung anong sasabihin niya,” Tulfo said.
Legarda is a member of the Cayetano bloc, while Tulfo belongs to the Gatchalian bloc. Tulfo also apologized to the public for the events that have transpired in the Senate and urged senators from the other bloc to work with them in addressing more pressing concerns facing the country. “Kaya nga po we cut short our meeting kanina ng Blue Ribbon kasi may maa pressing na problema po ang ating bayan, ‘yon pong nga biktima ng lindol doon sa Sarangani sa Mindanao. Isantabi na muna natin itong Blue Ribbon na ito ng mga accountability, let’s joined forces kayo po sa minority sumama po kayo sa amin para pag-usapan po natin kung paano tayo makatutulong sa mga tinamaan ng lindol,” he said.

Isolated rain showers continue to prevail across PH
MANILA, June 9 —— Most parts of the country will continue to get drenched with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
The southwest monsoon, however, will cause scattered rains and thunderstorms across Ilocos Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Zambales. Moderate to heavy rains in those areas could result in flash floods or landslides. Metro Manila and the rest of the country will get isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
PAGASA forecast moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough seas throughout northern Luzon. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate with slight to moderate seas. Meanwhile, PAGASA said that as of 2 a.m., no low pressure area is monitored for possible tropical cyclone formation.

Pinoys back joint military exercises in West Philippine Sea – OCTA
MANILA, Philippines, June 9 —— A large majority of Filipinos support the conduct of joint military exercises in the West Philippine Sea, according to a commissioned survey by the OCTA Research group.
The March 19 to 25 survey, which was commissioned by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), found that 71 percent of the respondents believe that joint military exercises or patrols in the West Philippine Sea will have a beneficial effect on the country. Only 14 percent said it would be harmful, while seven percent said it will have no effect. “The finding… carries notable implications for Philippine defense policy and public communication,” OCTA said. “The survey data suggest that a substantial portion of the public views such activities as contributing to regional stability, which may be a relevant consideration as policymakers evaluate the scope and direction of existing defense arrangements,” it added.
OCTA said the variation in public opinion across geographic and socioeconomic indicators warrant attention, noting that “differences may reflect historical experiences, proximity to areas of tension or varying levels of access to information about the nature and objectives of these activities.” “The findings point to a potential need for more inclusive and region-sensitive public communication efforts,” it added.
The survey was released upon the request of AFP, OCTA said. It had 1,200 respondents and a margin of error of plus/minus three percent.

Melai Cantiveros appeals for aid in quake-hit GenSan
MANILA, Philippines, June 9 —— Actress and television host Melai Cantiveros has appealed for prayers and assistance for her hometown of General Santos City after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Philippines.
Cantiveros shared photos on Instagram showing the aftermath of the earthquake and expressed concern for residents affected by the powerful tremor, which was felt across parts of Mindanao.
“In Jesus Name tanggalin nyu na Lord ang mga aftershocks and sana Lord makabangon ang Mindanao labi na ang Gensan Lord sa paglindol na itu (In Jesus’ name, Lord, please remove the aftershocks and help Mindanao, especially General Santos, recover from this earthquake),” she wrote. “Thank you sa lahat ng nangamusta sa pamilya ko , thank you Lord all safe sila and praying for all families na safe din sila (Thank you to everyone who asked about my family. Thank you, Lord, they are all safe, and I am praying that all families are safe as well),” she added.
The television personality also used her platform to call for immediate assistance, noting that hospitals in General Santos require additional tents amid relief and emergency operations. “Panawagan nadin po sa lahat ng gustu mag helps need po ng more Tents sa mga hospitals namin dun (I am also calling on everyone who wants to help. We need more tents for our hospitals there) #PrayforMindanao,” Cantiveros ended her post.
The appeal came as authorities continued assessing the impact of what the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) described as the strongest earthquake to hit the country this year.
Phivolcs said the earthquake struck at 7:37 a.m. and was later upgraded to a magnitude of 7.8. The agency reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers and was centered about 32 kilometers south, 4 degrees west of Maasim, Sarangani. As of posting, at least 19 people have died from the earthquake which damaged buildings and infrastructure and prompted tsunami warnings and advisories in parts of the Asia-Pacific region.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in affected areas across Mindanao and directed government agencies to immediately carry out disaster response, relief and recovery efforts. Emergency responders continued damage assessments and humanitarian operations throughout the region as displaced residents sought temporary shelter and assistance.

BINI, IV of Spades, Gloc-9, Ben&Ben, other music acts headline ‘Coachella of the South’
June 9 —— Fresh from their historic performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, BINI performed once again at “Coachella” — this time in the South.
Dubbed the “Coachella of the South,” the Nation’s Girl Group captivated Bicolanos with their vibrant performance on May 30 at CamSur Uptown in Pili during the “Kaogma Festival 2026: The Hottest Festival in the World,” which drew more than 150,000 attendees.
Clad in their colorful, stylish outfits, BINI members Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna and Sheena opened their set with their hit Pantropiko followed by Bikini, Blush, Unang Kilig and Salamin, Salamin. It was also a special moment for Maloi, as the crowd and her fellow members sang “Happy Birthday” to her and surprised her with a cake on the main stage. The grand stage was beautifully crafted with a world-class design. Dazzling fireworks display and water effects are added to the festive atmosphere.
Gwen and Mikha, who both have Bicolano roots, greeted their kababayans in the Bicolano language, delighting fans who had camped at the campground, traveled from nearby towns and taken advantage of the free transportation provided for the event. Children were also in attendance, accompanied by their parents and dressed up like their beloved idols.
Boy band New: ID and music group Six-Part Invention also performed on Day 5 of the week-long festival before BINI took the stage.
Camarines Sur Governor Lray Villafuerte shared that organizers began talks with BINI in 2023 about headlining the event, years before the group made its highly anticipated Coachella debut. “We’re fortunate na nakuha natin ang BINI from Coachella to CamSur,” he said.
This year’s celebration was “definitely bigger and better,” he added. “With BINI here, they are a global icon, sikat na sila internationally. So, that’s a challenge for us next year. How can we make Kaogma a global standard in terms of everything. If you look at it, our stage is already at a global standard. But we will make it a more global standard next year, bigger and better. Expect that.”
Ben&Ben and Lola Amour delivered their respective acts during the festival’s opening night. Day 2 featured performances by Sponge Cola, Earl Agustin, El Manu and Jessy Kang, while IV OF SPADES and Dilaw energized the crowd on Day 3.
Headlining the “Rap Night” on Day 4 was Filipino rap icon Gloc-9 who electrified the crowd with his popular songs such as Upuan, Simpleng Tao, Hari ng Tondo and Sirena. He was joined by Paul N Ballin, HELLMERRY, and Uncle Dags. The festival concluded with performances by RCK Global and Kate Torres Band on the last day of Kaogma.

Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera fly to Quebec for new film ‘Remember’
June 9 —— This marks the start of a ton of beautiful memories! Three years after leading the history-making Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Rewind”, Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera are set to star in a new film together entitled “Remember”. The royal box office couple broke the news before departing to shoot in Quebec.
Not only will “Remember” see Dingdong and Marian reunite with their “Rewind” director Mae Cruz Alviar, but the film also sets the stage for an exciting team-up between Star Cinema, APT Entertainment, AgostoDos Pictures, and Regal Entertainment.
As they unveiled the big announcement, Dingdong and Marian couldn’t hide their excitement about embarking on their next cinematic journey together — while of course, exchanging that sweet DongYan banter we all know and love! “After three years, na-miss namin katrabaho ang isa’t isa,” Dingdong said. To which a giddy Marian replied, “Parang mas miss n’ya ‘ko!”
Given their back-to-back projects and business ventures, Dingdong then teased his wife about their schedules aligning through their new film: “Sabi ko, ‘Kailangan siguro mag-movie na lang tayo para ma-solo naman kita.” But above all, what drew Dingdong and Marian to headlining their next movie together is the story they will impart to audiences in “Remember”. “Mas nae-excite ako d’on sa kwentong ibibigay namin sa kanila,” Marian gushed. “No’ng una naming mabasa talaga ‘yung script, sabi ko, ‘Wow, grabe.’” “Remember” was indeed well worth the wait for Marian, who called it the “perfect” next chapter after she and her husband touched countless hearts with “Rewind”.
Later that day, Star Cinema released the stunning key art for “Remember”, depicting the couple in a warm embrace and a look of love in their eyes — a touching glimpse at what the new film has in store for fans and moviegoers alike!

Alas gets back on track with AVC Women’s Cup sweep of Kyrgyzstan
June 9 —— ALAS Pilipinas Women made sure there would be no lingering effects from its Australia collapse, overwhelming Kyrgyzstan, 25-9, 25-11, 25-17, to return to the win column in the 2026 AVC Women’s Cup at the Candon City Arena.
The Nationals needed just one hour to dispatch the winless Kyrgyz side and improve to 2-1 in Pool A, less than a day after seeing a two-sets-to-none lead slip away in a heartbreaking five-set defeat. Thea Gagate showed the way for Alas Women with 11 points built on eight attacks, two blocks, and an ace, while Jovelyn Gonzaga chipped in 10 points in a welcome bounce-back performance.
Captain Alyssa Valdez added nine points, while Ces Molina recovered from a difficult outing against Australia by contributing eight points and nine excellent digs. There would be no such suspense this time as Alas Women asserted itself from the opening serve and never looked back, repeatedly exposing the gap in class between the two sides through superior attacking, blocking and floor defense.
The match was effectively decided by the third set when the Philippines raced to a 7-0 lead, prompting interim coach Shaq delos Santos to empty his bench and spread the minutes around. The trio of Alyssa Solomon, Ara Galang and Cla Loresco off the bench ensured the intensity never dipped, helping Alas maintain a comfortable cushion all the way to the finish.
Niña Ytang added six points, while Loresco and setter Kyle Negrito scored four each as every Philippine rotation found success against an overmatched Kyrgyz side. The emphatic victory restored momentum for Alas Pilipinas ahead of its toughest assignment yet, a crucial clash against perennial Asian contender South Korea on Tuesday, 3 p.m., with semifinal implications hanging in the balance.

Kimi Antonelli makes it five straight wins in frenetic Monaco GP
June 9 —— KIMI Antonelli added another chapter to his remarkable 2026 season, conquering a chaotic Monaco Grand Prix to become the youngest winner in the 76-year history of Formula 1’s most prestigious race.
The 19-year-old Mercedes star converted pole into victory despite a race filled with incidents, multiple retirements and strategy twists, extending his winning streak to five consecutive Grands Prix. The feat carries significant historical weight as every driver in Formula 1 history to put together a five-race winning streak in a season has gone on to win that year’s world championship. “It’s been an incredible weekend, an incredible race,” said Antonelli. “It was one of those days where we had incredible pace and it was just coming all so naturally. The car was feeling incredible and it was just giving me the confidence to push, so it was a very enjoyable day.”
The race’s complexion changed almost instantly when front-row starter Max Verstappen stalled on the grid and retired after just one lap with a power unit issue, removing one of Antonelli’s biggest threats before the contest had properly settled. From there, Antonelli controlled proceedings around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, steadily building an advantage while chaos unfolded behind him.
While the young Mercedes driver cruised at the front, his teammate George Russell endured a miserable afternoon after picking up a five-second penalty for crossing the pit exit line while attempting to gain track position. The Briton’s race spiraled further when he failed to properly serve the sanction and was hit with a drive-through penalty, effectively ending any hopes of challenging near the front.
The drama continued to build behind the leader, culminating on Lap 66 when hometown favorite Charles Leclerc crashed out shortly after a Safety Car restart, triggering another intervention and eventually leading to a red flag that set up a tense run to the finish. Despite the repeated interruptions, with seven race retirements in total, Antonelli didn’t flinch as he managed every restart flawlessly and maintained his advantage whenever racing resumed, displaying the composure that has so fardefined his breakout campaign.
Lewis Hamilton emerged as Antonelli’s closest challenger and secured second place for Ferrari, matching the late Ayrton Senna’s long-standing record of eight Monaco podium finishes. Isack Hadjar capped another impressive weekend, matching a career-best third-place finish for his first podium with Red Bull after surviving the race’s late chaos. Oscar Piastri salvaged fourth for McLaren, while Liam Lawson backed up Racing Bulls’ strong afternoon in fifth ahead of teammate Arvid Lindblad, giving the Faenza-based squad two cars inside the top six. Pierre Gasly finished seventh for Alpine, with Alex Albon taking eighth for Williams. Esteban Ocon added two points for Haas in ninth, while Sergio Perez rounded out the top 10 to secure Cadillac’s first-ever F1 point.
The result strengthened Antonelli’s command of the Drivers’ Championship with 156 points, opening a 66-point advantage over Hamilton, who moved up to second on 90 points. Russell slipped to third with 88 after another difficult weekend. Five races ago, Antonelli was still emerging as Formula 1’s newest sensation. Five victories later, he has become the youngest Monaco winner ever, the first Mercedes driver since Hamilton to string together five straight wins and now the overwhelming favorite to become the sport’s youngest-ever world champion.

Zverev fights off Cobolli for maiden Grand Slam title at French Open
PARIS, June 9 —— Alexander Zverev finally shattered the barrier between himself and Grand Slam glory by grinding down a stubborn Flavio Cobolli 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-7(5) 6-1 in the French Open final on Sunday to lift his maiden major trophy at Roland Garros.
After falling three times at the final hurdle, including in Paris two years ago, Zverev capped a relentless run by becoming the first German man to win a major title since Boris Becker’s Australian Open triumph three decades ago. With the sun shining down on Court Philippe Chatrier, Zverev broke Cobolli with a backhand shot that pinged off the Italian’s orange-framed racket, and he tightened his grip further to wrap up the opening set with a forehand winner down the middle.
Cobolli fired himself up and produced stunning shot-making to break in the seventh game of the next set and then drew level with a confident hold, as the center court crowd whipped up a soccer-like atmosphere for the former AS Roma academy player. Those voices soon fell silent deep in the third set as 10th seed Cobolli struck a forehand into the net to gift Zverev a set point, and the German promptly regained the advantage thanks to another unforced error.
A spell of passive play from Zverev meant that he was broken twice in the fourth set, but the German dialled up the intensity to go level at 5-5, only to crack under pressure in the tiebreak as Cobolli fired a forehand rocket to force a decider. With the closing stages of the contest lacking the quality of last year’s epic between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Zverev edged in front and used all his experience to finally earn his long-awaited crown.

5 Tips To Keep Your Kidneys Healthy
The kidneys act like your body’s personal garbage collectors. Every day, these two bean-shaped organs, which sit just below your rib cage on either side of your spine, filter about 55 gallons of blood daily to sift out about two quarts of waste products and excess water.
Anita Patel, M.D., a kidney disease specialist at Henry Ford Health, knows the importance of these critical organs. The kidneys prevent the buildup of wastes and excess fluid in the body, keep electrolyte levels stable, produce hormones that make red blood cells, regulate blood pressure and build strong bones.
People who have high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney failure are at increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease, which the National Kidney Foundation says affects more than 26 million Americans. But even if you don’t fall into one of those high-risk categories, it’s important to keep your kidneys healthy. Kidney disease can happen to anyone.
Dr. Patel offers five strategies to preserve kidney health:
1. Stay hydrated. Your kidneys need sufficient fluid to clear sodium and flush out toxins. And while there’s no clear-cut guideline regarding the exact amount of water and other fluids you should drink daily to maintain good health, most experts recommend sipping 1.5 to 2 liters daily. Just keep in mind that your fluid needs depend on various factors including gender, fitness level, climate, health conditions and whether you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have previously suffered from kidney stones or kidney disease.
2. Adopt a healthy diet. The vast majority of kidney problems stem from other medical conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. So it makes sense to reduce your risk of those chronic conditions by eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Not only will this style of eating help control weight and blood pressure, it may also stave off other diseases, such as cancer.
3. Exercise. Engaging in regular physical activity is just as important as developing healthy eating habits. Both help prevent weight gain and keep blood pressure levels in check. “Keeping trim and fit helps the kidneys continue to function as long as possible,” Patel says. Just don’t go overboard. Extreme activity, particularly when you’re not already fit and healthy, can put undue stress on the kidneys.
4. Stop cigarette smoking. Smoking wreaks havoc on your blood vessels, decreasing the flow of blood not only to the kidneys but to all of your vital organs. And when the kidneys don’t have adequate blood flow, they won’t work as well as they should. To make matters worse, smoking raises blood pressure levels and increases your risk of heart disease.
5. Keep medications in check. Many medications, whether over-the-counter or prescription, filter through the kidneys to be cleared from the human body. Even seemingly “healthy” supplements can harm your kidneys. “Herbs and supplements may increase toxins in the body and affect the kidney cells directly,” Dr. Patel says. Before buying supplements, visit authoritative health care websites, such as the United States National Library of Medicine Drug Information Portal, to read up on potential risks.
The bottom line: The best way to maintain your kidney health is to take care of yourself. Eat sensible food, stick to a regular fitness regimen and avoid unnecessary medications. Most important, if you smoke, stop. People who have diabetes or high blood pressure should also receive regular screenings for kidney dysfunction or spilling protein in the urine.
“Kidney disease is often silent, but if you notice symptoms, such as swelling in the legs, fatigue, urinating frequently or at night, bubbly looking urine or suffer from unrelenting headaches, contact your primary care physician,” Patel says. Spotting kidney disease early – and treating it – can help you sidestep complications ranging from bone disease to premature death.
