US President Donald Trump said he believed a deal with Iran was “very possible”, but threatened to resume his bombardment of the country if negotiations fell apart. International oil benchmark Brent North Sea made a double-digit plunge to under US$100 a barrel, before cutting losses, finishing down 7.8 per cent at US$101.27 a barrel.

Major US indices extended a powerful rally, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq finishing at records for the second straight day. The Nasdaq gained two per cent. European equities also got a boost, with the Paris exchange piling on gains of nearly three per cent and both Frankfurt and London ending the day up more than two per cent.

US news outlet Axios, citing two US officials, reported that both sides were close to agreeing on a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war and set a framework for more detailed nuclear negotiations. “The (Axios) news has ignited fresh optimism that we’re moving in the right direction for global energy markets, which is supporting a broad risk-on move” into equities, noted Saxo UK investor strategist Neil Wilson. “We’ve had very good talks over the last 24 hours, and it’s very possible that we’ll make a deal,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told local media that the “US plan and proposal are still under review”, and that Tehran would convey its position to mediator Pakistan “after finalizing its views”. But Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, who has taken the lead in negotiations with the US, warned Wednesday that Washington “is seeking, through a naval blockade, economic pressure and media manipulation, to destroy the country’s cohesion in order to force us to surrender”. “We have been promised peace deals before, which have then failed to materialize, so while the market is willing to trade on the back of this de-escalation, it will take further concrete steps to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz before the oil price can meaningfully fall below US$100 per barrel for Brent crude,” said Kathleen Brooks, research director at trading platform XTB.

Wall Street’s latest move higher was also prompted by strong corporate earnings. Shares in chip-maker AMD jumped 18.6 per cent after it posted good first-quarter figures as well as a rosy outlook, helping other tech stocks. Dow component Disney also had a good day, rising 7.5 per cent after reporting better results than expected as markets cheered CEO Josh D’Amaro’s first quarterly results since taking the top job.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Seoul’s Kospi stock index piled on more than five per cent to pass 7,000 points for the first time. That came on the back of an eye-watering surge by Samsung, which rocketed 14.4 per cent to hit a market capitalization above US$1 trillion thanks to huge demand for its AI chips. Samsung is only the second Asian firm, after Taiwan’s TSMC, to reach the figure. Samsung’s shares have risen around 300 per cent over the past year as the artificial intelligence boom boosts South Korean growth.

Source: channelnewsasia.com

———————-

Hantavirus is on the rise in Argentina, where a stricken cruise ship began its journey

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, May 7 —— Officials and experts in Argentina are scrambling to determine if their country is the source of a deadly hantavirus outbreak that has gripped an Atlantic cruise.

The health emergency aboard the ship that’s moored across the ocean comes as Argentina sees a surge of hantavirus cases that many local public health researchers attribute to the recently accelerating effects of climate change. Argentina, where the cruise to Antarctica departed, is consistently ranked by the World Health Organization as having the highest incidence of the rare, rodent-borne disease in Latin America.

Higher temperatures expand the virus’s range because, in part, as it gets warmer and ecosystems change, rodents that carry the hantavirus can thrive in more places, experts say. People typically contract the virus from exposure to rodent droppings, urine or saliva.

“Argentina has become more tropical because of climate change, and that has brought disruptions, like dengue and yellow fever, but also new tropical plants that produce seeds for mice to proliferate,” said Hugo Pizzi, a prominent Argentine infectious disease specialist. “There is no doubt that as time goes by, the hantavirus is spreading more and more.” The Argentine Health Ministry on Tuesday reported 101 hantavirus infections since June 2025, roughly double the caseload recorded over the same period the previous year.

A hantavirus found in South America, called the Andes virus, can cause a severe and often fatal lung disease called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The disease led to death in nearly a third of cases in the last year, Argentina’s Health Ministry said, up from an average mortality rate of 15 in the five years before that. Authorities said passengers on the MV Hondius ship tested positive for the Andes virus.

The cause of infection remains under investigation

Argentine officials say they’re trying to pin down where infected passengers traveled in the country before boarding the Dutch-flagged cruise liner in Ushuaia, a city in southern Argentina known as the end of the world. Once they know the itineraries, they say they will trace contacts, isolate close contacts, and actively monitor to prevent further spread.

The UN health agency, or WHO, says that the first death on board, a 70-year-old Dutch man, happened on April 11. His 69-year-old wife, also Dutch, died on April 26. The third passenger, a German woman, died on May 2. The virus can incubate for between one and eight weeks. That makes it hard to know whether the passengers contracted the virus before leaving Argentina for Antarctica on April 1; during a scheduled stop to a remote South Atlantic island; or aboard the ship.

The province of Tierra del Fuego, where the vessel docked for weeks before departing, has never seen a case of hantavirus. Before boarding, the Dutch couple went sightseeing in Ushuaia and traveled elsewhere in Argentina and Chile, WHO said. The Argentine government’s leading hypothesis is that the couple contracted the virus during a bird-watching outing in Ushuaia, according to two investigators who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media as they sifted through still-fragmentary evidence. Authorities are also tracing the Dutch tourists’ footsteps through the forested hillsides of Patagonia in southern Argentina, where some infections are clustered.

Because early symptoms resemble the fever and chills of a flu, “tourists might think they just have a cold and not take it seriously. That makes it particularly dangerous,” Raul González Ittig, genetics professor at the National University of Córdoba and a researcher at state science body CONICET, said.

Climate change sends rodents to new frontiers

Argentina, in recent years, endured a historic drought. But it also had bouts of unexpectedly intense rainfall, part of a broader pattern of wild weather that scientists attribute to climate change.

Some of this variability has created conditions that have allowed hantavirus to flourish, experts say. Dry spells drive animals out of their usual habitats in search of food and water. Huge amounts of rain lead to vegetation growth, scattering seeds that attract leaf-munching rodents. “When precipitation increases, food availability increases, rodent populations grow, and if there are infected rodents, the chance of transmission between rodents — and eventually to humans — also increases,” Ittig said.

Although hantavirus cases once were limited to the southern reaches of Patagonia, now 83% of cases are found in Argentina’s far north, according to the Health Ministry. In January, the ministry issued an alert on several fatal hantavirus outbreaks, including in the most populous province of Buenos Aires. “With the climate changing, the epidemiological picture has completely changed,” said Pizzi. “The ship may be an isolated case. But this virus isn’t going anywhere.”

Source: manilatimes.net

—————————————————————

MARITIME NEWS

Australia Bans Bulk Carrier for MLC Violations

May 7 —— The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued a third ban in less than two months after another shipping company was found to have underpaid its crew, breaching the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC).

On April 23, AMSA boarded the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier, FPMC B Forever, operated by Formosa Plastics Marine Corporation, in the Port of Newcastle for a port State control inspection. Inspectors found the crew had been underpaid by almost A$15,000 and were being charged for potable water, among other deficiencies, which is an unlawful practice. AMSA detained the vessel and issued a ban to Formosa Plastics Marine Corporation, prohibiting the vessel from entering Australian ports or waters until October 4, effective immediately.

AMSA Acting Executive Director Operations, Greg Witherall, said the ban leaves no room for misinterpretation. “Underpaying seafarers – by any amount – is unlawful and will trigger enforcement action. This action should serve as a clear warning to operators who think they can cut corners at the expense of their crew. “The law is clear: if you underpay your crew, the cost will be far higher than the wages you tried to withhold.”

Operators who are denied access to Australian waters or ports can face millions of dollars in lost revenue, supply chain disruption and increased scrutiny in future inspections.

Source: marinelink.com

———————-

NGO Seeks Answers After CBP Removed Crew from Cruise Ships

May 7 —— A local immigration advocacy group and other community groups are reporting that U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents boarded two cruise ships in the Port of San Diego, removing multiple crewmembers from the ships and placing them in custody. They are calling for an explanation and access to the crewmembers to ensure their due process rights are being respected.

The latest incident came to light when a passenger, Dharmi Mehta, who had disembarked from the cruise ship Disney Magic in San Diego, observed crewmembers being walked off the ship and placed in handcuffs. The disembarking passengers drove past the scene in their car and videotaped it, handing over the information to the group Union del Barrio.

ABC 10News San Diego reports the travelers told the group that the CBP agents were walking off uniformed crewmembers who appeared to be performing their duties aboard the ship. One crewmember, they said, appeared to have been their waiter during the cruise, and others were in chef’s uniforms. They were also reported to still be wearing the nametags on their uniforms. The video shows the crewmembers restrained with their hands behind their backs, apparently in zip ties or handcuffs. They were being loaded onto CBP vehicles.

During a press conference, the groups asserted that 10 crewmembers were removed from the Disney Magic on April 23 while the ship was docked in San Diego. It said four additional crewmembers were removed from a Holland America Line ship, likely the Zaandam, two days later.

The groups are demanding an explanation from CBP with the motives for the enforcement action and the legal basis for retaining the crewmembers. They assert that none of the crewmembers were attempting to exit the ship and were performing their duties onboard. They want to know where the people were taken, where they are now, and ensure their legal rights and that their families have access to them.

Filipino groups in Virginia reported last summer that crewmembers were also being taken off Carnival Cruise Line ships and whisked on to planes back to the Philippines. Immigration agents asserted charges such as child pornography against some of the crewmembers. There were also inferences of visa violations. There were earlier reports last year that several crewmembers were also removed from cruise ships operating on the Great Lakes.

The Philippine government became aware of the cases. In October 2025, the embassy said it was in contact with the U.S. authorities and investigating the cases.

ABC 10News reported it had contacted Customs and Border Patrol and was waiting for a response. Holland America Line told the news outlet that it was a law enforcement matter and that it cooperates with law enforcement investigations. It referred the reporter to CBP.

Source: maritime-executive.com

———————-

Cargo vessel sinks off Greek island, all crew rescued

May 7 —— Greece has rescued all nine crew members, eight Turkish nationals and one Azerbaijani, after a cargo vessel ran aground on rocks and sank off the island of Andros on 6 May.

The Vanuatu-flagged ship, identified as Corsage C, had departed Albania carrying hundreds of metric tons of soda and was en route to Ukraine when the incident occurred, Reuters reports.

Officials said there were no visible signs of pollution, though precautionary measures are underway. The spike was primarily fueled by the revaluation impact of a sliding peso against the US dollar, which significantly inflated the cost of servicing foreign-denominated loans.

During the month, the Philippine currency weakened by more than three pesos against the greenback, overshadowing modest gains from debt repayments. Domestic debt reached P12.53 trillion, marking a 0.44 percent increase from the previous month. This growth was driven largely by the net issuance of government securities as Manila continues to tap local markets to fund its national budget, with currency fluctuations adding a further 8.68 billion pesos to the value of foreign-currency domestic holdings.

External debt saw a more dramatic jump, rising nearly 5 percent to P5.95 trillion by the end of the first quarter. While the government managed net repayments of P2.55 billion, the depreciation of the peso added P299.5 billion to the total valuation of foreign obligations. The Treasury also reported that guaranteed obligations edged up to P381.41 billion, representing a nearly 11 percent increase compared to the end of 2025 as the government continues to navigate global currency volatility.

Source: news.abs-cbn.com

———————-

DOH: Filipinos aboard MV Hondius show no signs of Hantavirus infection

MANILA, May 7 —— None of 38 Filipino seafarers aboard the MV Hondius are showing signs of a Hantavirus infection, according to the Department of Health.

The update from the health agency comes following a press briefing by the World Health Organization saying of the 147 people on the ship, three have died including a Dutch couple confirmed to have been infected. “Importante ay sila ay walang hantavirus. Sila ay nakabukod. I think following yung quarantine protocols,” DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo told ABS-CBN News.

Domingo added that while the Filipino crew remain in Cabo Verde, health authorities there are handling quarantine and monitoring procedures. The incident aboard the MV Hondius has drawn comparisons to the quarantine of cruise ships during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the Diamond Princess docked in Japan in 2020. However, the DOH said countries are now more prepared to respond to such health threats.

Before passengers and crew are allowed to return home, Domingo said they will first undergo quarantine and testing protocols in the territories where they are expected to disembark, including the Canary Islands under Spanish jurisdiction. He added that upon arrival in the Philippines, the returning seafarers will undergo health screening procedures by the Bureau of Quarantine.

The World Health Organization is closely monitoring a cluster of suspected and confirmed hantavirus infections aboard the expedition cruise ship as it remains near Cabo Verde Island off the coast of West Africa. According to the world body, seven out of the ship’s 147 passengers and crew members fell ill after the vessel visited several islands along the African coast.

Among the cases was a Dutch couple who later died and were confirmed to have contracted hantavirus. Another passenger also died, although authorities have yet to determine whether the virus caused the death. One patient has since been transferred to an intensive care unit in South Africa, while two others are set to be evacuated to the Netherlands for further treatment. Another individual reportedly experienced mild fever symptoms but has since improved.

Hantavirus is a potentially deadly disease commonly transmitted through exposure to the saliva, urine, or feces of infected rodents such as rats. People may become infected through contaminated food or drink, inhalation of virus particles, or rodent bites. There is currently no specific cure for the disease. The virus also has an incubation period ranging from one to six weeks, with symptoms that may resemble leptospirosis during the early stages.

Source: news.abs-cbn.com

———————-

Japanese missile system ‘sinks’ PH target vessel in Balikatan drills

MANILA, May 7 —— The Japanese Type 88 surface-to-ship missile system, fired for the first time in a Balikatan exercise, sank the decommissioned patrol corvette, former BRP Quezon (PS-70), during the maritime strike (MARSTRIKE) drills conducted off Ilocos Norte.

In an interview with reporters, Philippine Balikatan spokesperson Marine Col. Dennis Hernandez said the MARSTRIKE drills that took place off the Paoay Sand Dunes started around 10 a.m. Initially, a U.S. “Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System,” which has a range of around 70 kilometers, was fired as a “probing” round and used to determine the location of the target ship around 10:15 a.m.

After this, Hernandez said a “constructive simulation” was conducted where the U.S. NMESIS anti-ship missile system and the Philippine Navy’s C-Star sea-skimming surface-to-surface anti-ship cruise missile was fired via computer. After this, Japan’s Type 88 surface-to-ship missile system fired two rounds around 10:30 a.m. and hit the hull of the target squarely. The Japanese weapon has a range of 180 kilometers and a warhead weight of 225 kilograms.

Incidentally, this is Japan’s first time to participate in Balikatan live-fire drills. “Eventually after around 17 minutes, lumubog na siya. He also added that the U.S.’s “High Mobility Artillery Rocket System” fired at the spot where the ship sank. Both foreign partners have since responded and committed to providing continued support for the needs of Navotas.

On the other hand, Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco said the air quality index in Metro Manila remains within acceptable or normal levels despite the fire, based on data from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). “Additionally, we are utilizing a drone with thermal imaging capability to assess the possibility of ignition within the 44-hectare site,” Tiangco said.

He said the closure and rehabilitation plan for the landfill has not been implemented by the operator, which constitutes a violation of its Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). The fire at the NSLF continues to be managed by the NSLF Task Group led by the local government of Navotas and involves fire suppression operations through soil covering, smothering, and misting. The fire began on April 10 and is actively managed by several government agencies, including the MMDA, DND, Office of Civil Defense, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Transportation, and the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau.

Source: pna.gov.ph

———————-

‘Hagupit’ may enter PAR over the weekend – PAGASA

MANILA, May 7 —— Tropical Storm Hagupit (international name) is moving westward over the sea south of Guam and may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) over the weekend, the weather bureau said.

In its 5 a.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said as of 4 a.m., the center of the tropical storm was estimated at 1,995 km. east of northeastern Mindanao. It is moving westward at 20 kph, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. “Hagupit will continue moving westward in the next six hours, then turn west-northwestward for the remainder of the forecast period. It may enter the PAR between Saturday evening and Sunday morning and will be given a local name Caloy,” PAGASA said. Hagupit will further intensify as a high-end tropical storm but will begin to weaken and may be downgraded to a tropical depression by Tuesday over the Philippine Sea, it added.

PAGASA said Hagupit is less likely to directly affect the weather and sea conditions in the next three days. Meanwhile, the weather bureau said a low-pressure area (LPA) continues to approach east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, but is still not expected to develop into a tropical depression.

The LPA, however, is forecast to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Negros Island Region, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Zamboanga Peninsula. Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. PAGASA warned that possible flash floods or landslides may occur due to moderate to, at times, heavy rains due to the LPA and during severe thunderstorms caused by the easterlies.

Source: pna.gov.ph

———————-

4 in 10 Filipinos expect life to improve – SWS

MANILA, May 7 —— Around 4 in 10 Filipinos expect their quality of life to improve over the next 12 months, according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) released.

Out of 1,500 adults polled in late March, 38 percent were “optimists” on their quality of life, while 32 percent expected their lives to remain the same. Sixteen percent believe conditions will worsen, while 14 percent were undecided. These figures translate to a net personal optimism score of +23, classified by SWS as “high.” However, this marks a significant drop from the “very high” +36 recorded in November 2025 and falls below the 2025 average of +39. This is also the lowest since September 2020, when optimism plunged to a “mediocre” +2 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the pollster said.

SWS said the decline in optimism was observed in nearly all areas of the country, except in Visayas. Luzon areas outside the National Capital Region posted one of the steepest drops, falling from an “excellent” +40 in November 2025 to +22 in March 2026. Metro Manila’s score declined from +36 to +28, while Mindanao dropped from +35 to +20. The Visayas region remained relatively stable, slipping slightly from +29 to +27.

Both rural and urban populations recorded lower optimism levels. Rural areas fell from +36 to +24, while urban areas declined from +37 to +22. By gender, optimism decreased among both men and women. Women saw a sharper drop, from +39 to +20, compared to men whose scores declined from +34 to +26.

Across age groups, younger Filipinos remained the most optimistic. Filipinos aged 18 to 24 posted a “very high” +39, although this was down from +54 in late 2025. Older groups recorded lower scores, with those aged 55 and above at +10, categorized as “fair.”

Optimism also declined across all educational levels. College graduates saw their score fall from an “excellent” +44 to +26, while those with some senior high school education dropped from +44 to +29. Similar downward trends were observed among other educational groups. SWS noted that since it began tracking personal outlook in 1984, net personal optimism has turned negative only 11 times, hitting a record low of -19 in May 2020 at the height of pandemic lockdowns.

The March survey used face-to-face interviews with sampling error margins of ±3 percent for national estimates.

Source: news.abs-cbn.com

—————————————————————

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

P-pop group BINI honored at Senate for historic Coachella 2026 stint

MANILA, Philippines, May 7 —— Senators unanimously approved Sen. He also crossed paths with Yana (Ivana Alawi), a pickpocket who has an ailing mother.

“Nung ginagawa ‘yung kwento, ang ano sa amin, it has to be full of action also,” director Manny Palo said about the Dreamscape Entertainment-produced show in a recent press briefing. “When I direct any project, any series, I consider first and foremost the narrative. Second, all the other elements like location and all the elements within the location, kung paano ko gagamitin ‘yan, and the actors, of course. We always firmly believe that our audience deserves nothing else,” he added.

Aside from its action scenes, director Jojo Saguin said that Ivana and Joshua’s chemistry stood out from the show. “The action scenes, plus the undeniable chemistry of Ivana and Joshua, mayroon talaga. ‘Yung titigan pa lang nandoon na with the texture of Morocco in the background,” she said. Ivana echoed Joshua’s sentiments, and as a Filipino-Moroccan, it was a dream come true for her to be a part of the series. “Sobrang saya dahil everyone feels like family already, and of course, ‘Love Is Never Gone’ is my dream project. Fręch surged to a 3-1 lead in the decider but Eala broke her to level at 3-all, then held her serve for a 4-3 advantage. The third set featured several swings of momentum, but Eala held firm in the clutch. She expressed her gratitude to the Filipinos who came to watch her, some of whom skipped work as her match started at 11:00 a.m. in Rome. “I was so happy that I saw a lot of Pinoys. Chet Holmgren led the Thunder with 24 points and 12 rebounds while reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell added 18 points apiece. “We were a little choppy, a little rusty, but offensively we just stuck with it,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, saluting a Thunder defense that restricted the Lakers to their lowest score in a playoff game since 2021. “We just try to make people play outside their comfort zone, as simple as that,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of the Thunder defense. “Whatever guys like to do, we like to take away from them.”

The commanding Thunder victory underscored the size of the task facing the fourth-seeded Lakers if they are to defy the odds and upset the champions in the best-of-seven series. Oklahoma City completed a 4-0 regular-season sweep over the Lakers, winning each game by an average margin of 29.3 points. Rui Hachimura added 18 points with Marcus Smart bagging 12 and Deandre Ayton 10. Lakers head coach JJ Redick blamed unforced errors for his team’s problems. “The mistakes hurt us,” Redick said. “You’re playing the world champs, your margin for error in terms of mistakes is not that high… just too many tonight. The top-seeded Pistons looked to be cruising to a comfortable win after dominating in the first half and taking a 17-point lead in the third period. But a spirited Cleveland rally saw the Cavaliers close to within four points before Detroit finally pulled clear again in the fourth quarter.

Cunningham was one of six Detroit players to finish in double figures, with Tobias Harris adding 20 points while Duncan Robinson bagged five three-pointers on his way to a 19-point haul at the Pistons’ Little Caesars Arena. Daniss Jenkins added 12 points from the bench with Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren scoring 11 points apiece. Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 23 points, including four three-pointers, while James Harden scored 22 points with eight rebounds and seven assists. “It was a great team win — defending the ball, rebounding the ball,” Cunningham told NBC television. “We’ve got a great system in place. We didn’t do that in the last series so we want do that this series,” Cunningham said. “They want to come in and steal one, so we’ve got to do this again the day after tomorrow.” he added.

Source: news.abs-cbn.com

—————————————————————

FEATURED ARTICLE

What Are 10 Ways to Save Fuel?

Changing your approach to how you care for your vehicle is an effective way to save on fuel, these can range from adopting new driving behaviors to regular vehicle checkups. Learn these ways to make fuel wastage a thing of the past.

Here are ten effective ways to save fuel:

1. Adopt Efficient Driving Habits

Saving fuel starts with how you drive your vehicle. When a vehicle’s speed increases, the car experiences more drag (air resistance). This occurs when the force from the resistance causes the engine to work harder to accelerate which burns more fuel. By incorporating a more moderate driving speed, which is normally between 65-90 km/h, your vehicle will experience less drag as it moves.

Other practices include avoiding congested roads that lead to idling and keeping your rev per minute constantly around 3000rpm while driving. Another efficient driving habit to adopt is avoiding frequent lane changes and abrupt stops in stop-and-go traffic.

2. Use engine braking and drive in higher gears

Engine braking and driving in high gear is an underutilized method for driving that many drivers don’t consider when trying to save fuel. Engine braking is when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal and allow the engine to slow the vehicle down. This can be incorporated instead of using the brake pedal when you’re getting close to a traffic light or stop sign. Less fuel is consumed because the engine is allowed to slow the vehicle down, using less brake power to stop it.

3. Opt for fuel-efficient vehicles

If you are thinking of buying a new car, it is best to choose the type that is fuel efficient, such as vehicles with small engines or hybrid cars. These vehicles were designed to provide an excellent driving experience while using less fuel.

There are a few things to consider when looking for a fuel-efficient vehicle, such as fuel consumption rate, engine size and weight. Lighter cars and smaller engines burn less fuel and can maximize your fuel savings over time.

4. Maintain Optimal Tire Pressure

Optimal tire pressure plays an important role in a vehicle’s performance and fuel efficiency. Keeping your tires at the appropriate pressure recommended by your manufacturer will greatly benefit you down the line.

Let’s discuss how:

Underinflated tires increase the rolling resistance of a car and force the engine to work harder and burn more fuel. It also causes uneven tread wear on the edges of the tires which leads to the tires degrading faster.

Overinflated tires negatively affect the handling of the vehicle, they make the drive bumpy, create uneven tread wear and burn more fuel. Furthermore, the uneven tread wear reduces the tire’s ability to maintain contact with the road which can be dangerous at high speeds.

To make sure that you save on fuel and reduce wear and tear on your vehicle, it’s suggested that you check your tire pressure at least once a month.

5. Keep windows closed at high speeds

I know what you’re thinking, driving with your window open while cruising at a high speed feels refreshing, however, this significantly affects fuel efficiency. This normally occurs when a vehicle travels above 80 km/h, where the air resistance is at its greatest. To save on fuel consider keeping your windows closed and use the vehicle’s ventilation system instead.

6. Avoid heavy loads

Unnecessary weight in your vehicle makes the engine work harder which increases fuel consumption. This is especially true when driving long distances. Another load that adds extra weight and consumes more fuel are roof racks. Roof racks increase air resistance and reduce your vehicle’s aerodynamics when driving at high speeds.

To enjoy better fuel efficiency and a smoother drive consider packing light or keeping heavy items inside the vehicle.

7. Use quality fuel

There are three different fuels used in the Philippines, 91 RON and 95 RON, and diesel fuels. Each fuel impacts a vehicle’s performance and fuel efficiency differently. Octane 95 can withstand more compression before it ignites than Octane 93 which impacts vehicle performance at high speeds. Octane 93 is an older fuel and is ideal for older vehicle model as their engines were designed to perform optimally on 93.

New model vehicles with newer technology require high octane fuel like 95 as it helps maintain the vehicle’s performance and fuel efficiency. Using a lower octane fuel can decrease these vehicles’ fuel efficiency and can damage their engine or emission control systems.

8: Use cruise control on highways

Cruise control is an added feature that comes with most modern vehicles today. Not only do cruise control systems offer comfort and convenient driving, but they also help you save fuel. Cruise control helps the driver maintain a steady speed enabling them to only concentrate on steering. This allows for a smooth trip with fewer maneuvers. Cruise control minimizes how much fuel is used by removing the need to constantly accelerate and decelerate which burns more fuel.

9: Take advantage of loyalty programs

A great option to save on fuel costs these days is to join loyalty programs, these are offered at petrol stations, banks as well as through retailers. Whenever you refuel petrol you receive a certain amount of points. You can accumulate points over time and use them to purchase fuel or receive discounted prices. Consider choosing a program that is best for your needs and that allows you to fill up at a petrol station near you.

10. Combine trips

To save on fuel day to day, consider combining errands and driving fewer trips. Plan all the tasks you need to do ahead of time and do them all in one trip. By doing this you reduce the distance you drive that not only saves you valuable time but reduces fuel consumption.

Another effective way you can cut down on trips is by starting a lift club. Each person in the lift club can take turns driving one week a month, saving up to three weeks of fuel that you would have used if you were driving alone.

By implementing these ten ways, you can significantly reduce fuel wastage and save on fuel costs.

Source: www.cartrack.com.ph

HEADLINES Oil prices tumble, stocks rally on Mideast peace hopes Hantavirus is on the rise in Argentina, where a stricken cruise ship began its journey Australia Bans Bulk Carrier for MLC Violations NGO Seeks Answers After CBP Removed Crew from Cruise Ships Cargo vessel sinks off Greek island, all crew rescued Philippine debt climbs to […]

[1

post-1492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
